Respect Our Vote

To raise awareness of and opposition to the proposed Greens legislation to lower the voting age in Australia to 16.

Voting in Australia is mandatory for citizens aged 18 and older. The Greens are advocating to lower the voting age to 16, following a similar move in New Zealand. Greens MP Stephen Bates argues that 16 and 17-year-olds can engage in various responsibilities but lack a say in government. Respect Our Vote (RoV), a fictional youth-led organisation, opposes this and seeks to prevent the legislation from passing before the next federal election.

Young adults aged 18-24 who are eligible to vote in Australia.

Leave the decision making to the adults, and keep the voting age at 18.

Let teens be teens.

Our campaign aims to convey the message that teenagers shouldn’t be allowed to vote by highlighting the typical behaviours and attitudes associated with that age group. We’ll use humour and scenarios that resonate with young adults, emphasising that teenagers need time to grow, make mistakes, learn, and enjoy their youth before making important decisions about their future through voting. In essence, our message is, “Don’t rush teens into adulthood; let them be.” After all, we’ve all experienced being a teenager once.
